Medical GLP‑1 Weight Program by Dr. Hennessay

Medical Weight Loss with GLP-1 Medications in Torrance

Physician-led semaglutide and tirzepatide care with monthly follow-up, insurance support, and long-term metabolic strategy.

At Hennessay Medical, weight management is treated as real medical care — not an algorithm-only subscription. Our GLP-1 medical weight loss program is led directly by Dr. Meg Hennessay, a board-certified Family Medicine physician in Torrance, with convenient video visits and optional in-person care.

We help patients in Torrance, Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, and the greater South Bay navigate safe, physician-supervised treatment with medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide when appropriate.

Program pricing:
$145/month ongoing GLP-1 medical membership
$265 one-time initial physician consultation
Labs and medication are separate

Your care may include medication selection, insurance prior authorization support, dose titration, side-effect management, lab monitoring, and long-term planning to reduce the risk of rebound weight gain.

Schedule your initial consultation to determine whether semaglutide, tirzepatide, or another metabolic strategy is appropriate for you.

How the Program Works

1. Start with a physician consultation

Your first visit includes a medical review with Dr. Hennessay to evaluate your weight history, metabolic risk, medications, health goals, and whether GLP-1 therapy is medically appropriate.

We review factors such as BMI, blood sugar risk, blood pressure, cholesterol, liver health, thyroid history, gallbladder history, pregnancy status, and medication safety.

2. Complete baseline labs

Baseline labs help us understand your metabolic health and identify risks that may affect medication choice or monitoring.

Screening labs are approximately $250 and may include evaluation for diabetes risk, cholesterol disorders, thyroid health, liver and kidney function, and blood counts.

3. Determine the best medication pathway

When appropriate, we discuss FDA-approved GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Medication cost is separate and depends on insurance coverage, prior authorization outcome, pharmacy pricing, and medication availability.

When medically appropriate, we attempt insurance coverage and submit prior authorization documentation. If coverage is denied, we may appeal when there is a reasonable medical basis to do so.

4. Monthly physician follow-up

Once medication is started, monthly video follow-ups support safe dose titration, side-effect management, medication access planning, lab monitoring, and long-term weight maintenance strategy.

Optional in-person visits are available at our Torrance office when needed.

Who Is a Candidate for GLP-1 Weight Loss?

You may be a candidate for GLP-1 medical weight loss if you have:

BMI of 30 or higher

or

BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related medical condition such as:

Prediabetes
Type 2 diabetes
PCOS
High blood pressure
Fatty liver disease
High cholesterol or dyslipidemia
Insulin resistance
Cardiometabolic risk factors

We also consider your long-term weight history, medication history, family history, prior weight loss attempts, and overall health goals.

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone. Safety screening is important before starting treatment.

Why Physician Supervision Matters

GLP-1 medications are powerful metabolic therapies. They are not cosmetic medications, and they are not quick fixes.

Medication alone is not a complete plan.

Physician supervision matters because successful treatment requires appropriate patient selection, careful dosing, lab monitoring, side-effect management, and long-term maintenance planning.

Proper patient selection

Not every patient is an ideal candidate. We evaluate medical history and risk factors including:

BMI and metabolic risk
History of pancreatitis
Gallbladder disease
Thyroid cancer risk, including MEN2 or medullary thyroid carcinoma
Pregnancy status
Current medications
Diabetes or blood sugar risk
Kidney and liver health

Individualized dosing and titration

Starting too high or increasing too quickly can increase side effects. We tailor medication dosing based on:

Tolerability
Weight response
Blood sugar response
GI symptoms
Medication access
Long-term treatment goals

Lab monitoring

Depending on your medical history, we may monitor:

A1C or fasting glucose
Lipid profile
Liver enzymes
Kidney function
Thyroid screening when appropriate
Nutritional status during weight reduction

Side-effect management

Common side effects may include:

Nausea
Constipation
Diarrhea
Reflux
Bloating
Fatigue
Reduced appetite

These symptoms are often manageable with dose adjustment, hydration, dietary changes, constipation prevention, protein planning, and supportive care.

Long-term maintenance planning

Stopping GLP-1 therapy abruptly often leads to weight regain. Sustainable success requires a long-term strategy that may include:

Strength preservation
Adequate protein intake
Resistance training
Dose adjustment when needed
Maintenance planning
Gradual transitions when appropriate
Monitoring for rebound weight gain

A Medical Alternative to National Telehealth Weight Loss Platforms

Many patients compare local physician-led care to national telehealth platforms such as Ro Body or other subscription-based services.

National telehealth programs may be convenient, but they often rely on protocol-based care, rotating providers, limited continuity, minimal in-person access, and variable insurance support.

At Hennessay Medical, your care is led directly by Dr. Meg Hennessay, a board-certified Family Medicine physician in Torrance.

You are not handed off to a rotating provider or algorithm-only protocol or Nurse Practitioner.

Your care includes:

Direct care from the same physician
Integrated primary care perspective
Insurance prior authorization and appeals when appropriate
Optional in-person visits in Torrance
Monthly video follow-up
Lab monitoring and metabolic oversight
Long-term maintenance planning
Support for side effects, dosing, and medication access

For many patients, the medication is only one piece. The harder part is choosing the right medication pathway, tolerating dose changes, preserving muscle, managing side effects, and planning for long-term maintenance.

Weight management is a chronic medical condition. It deserves physician-led care.

Insurance Coverage and Prior Authorization Support

One of the biggest barriers to GLP-1 treatment is insurance approval.

At Hennessay Medical, we attempt insurance coverage whenever possible and appropriate.

We may:

Submit prior authorization requests
Provide required documentation
Clarify medical eligibility
Appeal denials when there is a reasonable medical basis
Discuss transparent self-pay options when coverage is excluded

Many patients are told that their insurance “doesn’t cover it” when the issue may be incomplete documentation, plan exclusions, step therapy, or prior authorization requirements.

We help you understand your options and advocate when appropriate.

Insurance approval is never guaranteed. Medication cost depends on your specific plan, coverage criteria, pharmacy pricing, and availability.

What Is GLP-1 Medical Weight Loss?

GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide target hormonal pathways involved in appetite regulation, insulin response, and metabolic signaling.

These medications may help:

Reduce appetite
Reduce “food noise”
Improve insulin resistance
Support meaningful weight loss
Improve cardiometabolic risk markers
Support blood sugar regulation

But medication alone is not a plan.

Successful, sustainable weight loss requires medical oversight, dose titration, lab monitoring, strength preservation, protein planning, and long-term strategy.

How Semaglutide Works

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a naturally occurring hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1.

GLP-1 is released from the intestines after eating and helps regulate appetite, insulin response, and blood sugar levels.

Semaglutide works by:

Increasing satiety
Helping you feel full sooner
Reducing hunger and food noise
Slowing gastric emptying
Stimulating insulin release when blood sugar is elevated
Reducing glucagon secretion

The result is decreased caloric intake, improved metabolic signaling, and clinically meaningful weight loss when combined with lifestyle support and medical oversight.

Semaglutide is administered once weekly as a subcutaneous injection. It is gradually titrated to minimize gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, bloating, constipation, or reflux.

In large clinical trials, once-weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg has demonstrated average weight loss of approximately 15% of initial body weight over 68 weeks when combined with lifestyle intervention.

Semaglutide is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related medical condition, and reduction of cardiovascular risk in certain high-risk populations.

How Tirzepatide Works

Tirzepatide is a dual incretin agonist, meaning it activates two hormone pathways:

GLP-1
GIP

By stimulating both receptors, tirzepatide supports appetite regulation and metabolic control.

Tirzepatide works by:

Increasing fullness and satiety
Reducing hunger and caloric intake
Improving insulin sensitivity
Supporting improved glucose metabolism
Slowing gastric emptying

This dual-hormone mechanism is associated with greater average weight loss compared to earlier GLP-1 medications in clinical trials.

In studies of adults with obesity, once-weekly tirzepatide has demonstrated average weight loss ranging from approximately 15% to over 20% of initial body weight, depending on dose.

Like semaglutide, tirzepatide is administered once weekly as a subcutaneous injection and requires careful dose escalation to improve tolerability.

Frequently Asked Questions About GLP-1 Weight Loss

How much weight can I lose?

Results vary. Clinical trials show meaningful weight reduction when GLP-1 medications are combined with medical oversight, dose titration, nutrition strategy, and lifestyle support.

Individual results depend on medication selection, dose, adherence, side effects, underlying metabolic health, insurance access, and long-term consistency.

How long do I need to stay on GLP-1 medication?

GLP-1 therapy is often long-term. Many patients regain weight after stopping medication abruptly.

We discuss maintenance planning early, including strength preservation, protein intake, metabolic monitoring, and possible long-term dosing strategies.

Does insurance cover semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Coverage varies by plan. Some plans cover weight-loss medications with prior authorization. Some exclude weight-loss medications entirely. Others may cover medications only for diabetes or specific medical criteria.

When appropriate, we attempt prior authorization and appeals.

Insurance approval is not guaranteed.

Are labs required?

Baseline labs are strongly recommended and often necessary for safe medical oversight. Labs help evaluate blood sugar risk, cholesterol, thyroid health, liver and kidney function, and other metabolic factors.

Are compounded GLP-1 medications safe?

We discuss FDA-approved options first and review risks, regulatory considerations, and medication access issues when applicable.

We do not offer or recommend compounded GLP-1 medications in clinic.

Is medication included in the monthly fee?

No. Medication cost is separate and depends on insurance coverage, pharmacy pricing, and the medication selected.

Are visits in person or video?

Most ongoing monthly follow-ups are completed by secure video visit. Optional in-person care is available at our Torrance office when needed.

Can I join if I am not a primary care patient?

Yes. This program may function independently for patients seeking focused weight management care.
